Neuroscience provides key strategies for exam preparation

As Year 12 students across Queensland sharpen their pencils for final exams this week, one CQUniversity expert says the smartest strategy isn’t cramming – it’s calmness.

“Calm homes and well-rested brains win the day,” said Head of Educational Neuroscience at CQUniversity Professor Ken Purnell.

He said despite the high-stakes atmosphere, simple routines, rest and reassurance can make all the difference.

“Cramming feels productive, but it’s a trick of the mind,” Prof Purnell explained.

“The brain remembers best through spaced study – short, focused bursts over time.

"Also, sleep isn’t optional! It’s when the brain locks learning into memory and clears away stress chemicals.”

He said parents also play a critical role in helping students stay steady under pressure.

“Calm is contagious. When parents stay steady, students think more clearly,” he said.

“A calm home, decent sleep and steady meals do more than any amount of nagging – encouragement beats interrogation every time.”

Prof Purnell suggests exercise and self-testing as powerful and often overlooked tools for effective study.

“Even a brisk walk does more for concentration than another hour of staring at notes,” he said.

“And testing yourself builds a stronger neural connection than re-reading the same page over and over.”

When it comes to the exams themselves, Prof Purnell advises students to start easy and build momentum.

“Do the questions you know first – that builds confidence and marks early, then you’re ready to tackle the tougher ones,” Prof Purnell said.

Above all, he encouraged students and families to keep perspective.

“Final exams still matter, but they’re just one part of the picture. Today’s assessments are more balanced – school-based work counts too.

“So, take a breath, trust your preparation and remember that calm and sleep are your secret weapons.”
