Physio dreams realised for Emily in Cairns
Cairns local Emily Grace’s decision to study physiotherapy was clear - but she never expected to be able to do it in her hometown.
Emily, who graduated from high school in 2023, had planned to move to Bundaberg or Rockhampton to pursue her degree, but when CQUniversity announced the launch of its physiotherapy course in Cairns, she jumped at the opportunity to stay close to home.
"It meant I could still work my casual job, study and live with my family, which I’m grateful for every day," Emily said.
Emily said her passion for physiotherapy began in childhood after suffering multiple ligament tears in her ankle.
"I admired the way my physiotherapist worked with me and helped me recover. From that moment, I knew I wanted to do the same - help people get back on their feet."
Now in her first year of study, Emily said she was particularly enjoying the hands-on learning experiences.
"The practical sessions, like massage, body manipulation and lab simulations are definitely a highlight," she said.
Emily said she was heavily involved in sport and hoped to one day work with professional athletes, focusing on musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
“I would love to work with professional sports teams and athletes.”
And while she’s open to career opportunities outside of Cairns, Emily said she acknowledged the vital need for more allied health professionals in the region.
She is also excited about CQUniversity’s planned new campus in the Cairns CBD.
"Having state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the city will provide so many opportunities for students. It’ll enhance our learning experience and help us build strong connections within the community."
With a determined mindset and a passion for helping others, Emily is confident she will achieve her goal of becoming a physiotherapist.
"I just have to keep my head up, work hard and keep chipping away."
