Overview

Study the Bachelor of Nutrition and learn about the dynamic world of food and nutrition science.

In this course, you'll learn about the science behind food and nutrition, including:

human and nutrition physiology,
dietary choices and behaviours,
food production,
processing and technologies,
public health nutrition, and
health promotion for populations and individuals with different needs.

You can choose a minor in Clinical Nutrition, Food Technology, Pathway to Teaching (Secondary), or Public Health. Read more about the minors in this course, in the Structure & Availability section.

You can enjoy the flexibility of studying this course online with some on-campus requirements depending on your chosen minor. No matter which minor you choose, your first year of study is completely online, with no on-campus requirements. Depending on your chosen minor, you may have on-campus residential school requirements as part of your course.

Career Opportunities

Depending on your chosen minor, you can enjoy a range of nutrition-related careers. The Clinical Nutrition minor is ideal if you want to progress to postgraduate study, such as a Master of Dietetics. Or, if you are seeking a career in the food manufacturing industry, in areas such as food production, food science, food quality control and agriculture, then the Food Technology minor can help you reach your career goals. The Pathway to Teaching minor provides a pathway to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and a career as a secondary school teacher. While the Public Health minor allows you to pursue a career in public health nutrition.

Your career as a nutritionist?

A nutritionist is a health professional who contributes towards the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of illness by educating populations, communities and individuals on healthy eating and advocating for nutritional lifestyle changes where necessary. Nutritionists have a defined and recognisable body of knowledge and utilise scientific principles and methods in the study of nutrition, applying these results to influence the wider environment affecting food intake and eating behaviour.

Clinical Nutrition Minor (Eight Units)

Study the Clinical Nutrition minor if you intend to apply for a postgraduate degree in dietetics, such as the Master of Dietetics that is expected to be available from 2027 at CQUniversity. Selection of this minor does not guarantee entry into a Master of Dietetics course. You must still apply and be accepted into a Master of Dietetics course as per normal processes using academic and non-academic entry requirements. Completion of Bachelor of Nutrition (Clinical Nutrition) alone does not meet the eligibility requirements for registration as an accredited dietitian.

In this minor, you'll study topics such as advanced clinical biochemistry, food science and analysis, nutrition assessment, food and nutrition services, public health nutrition and health promotion strategies.

Residential Schools

Whilst almost all of this course is able to be studied remotely online, compulsory residential schools are held at the North Rockhampton or Bundaberg campus depending on the minor undertaken. Please ensure you check the CQUniversity Handbook Residential School Page for dates and the relevant Unit Profile for more details.

Credit Transfer

Indicative First-Year Fee

The Indicative First-Year Fee is the approximate cost of enrolling in this course for one full-time academic year (eight units over two terms) for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and should be used as a guide only. Your actual fees may vary depending on the units you select to study and your study load. Check the Cost per Unit spreadsheet available on our Understanding Course Fees webpage.

Commonwealth Support and Government Assistance

Commonwealth Supported Places

This course has Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) available, and as a domestic student, you'll be offered a CSP, provided you meet CSP eligibility requirements. CSPs are subsidised by the Australian Government, meaning you are only required to pay the student contribution rather than full tuition fees.

HECS-HELP Loan

You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP government loan if you are offered a CSP. HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that assists you in paying your student contributions. Provided you meet the HECS-HELP eligibility criteria, you may use HECS-HELP to defer part or all of your student contribution fees.

SSAF is charged in addition to your student contribution or tuition fees and is used to help enhance your study experience.
